InSex!
InSex is the title of my new film series, due to start production this summer. Each episode of InSex will explore three compelling insect sexual behaviors in ways that are funny, factual, and photogenic.
The first episode will cover some of the ways in which amorous males entice females.
I'm selling prints to help cover production costs.

---A Little Bit About Me---
In 2009, I graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in biology and a minor in media studies.
I'm currently a graduate student in the Science and Natural History Filmmaking program at Montana State University, Bozeman, USA.
For the better part of a decade, I've photographed all sorts of insects...
…insects eating...
...insects haunting your dreams...
…and perhaps my favorite, insects making sweet, sweet love. Mmmm.
Now I'd like to take my fascination with insect mating behavior and turn it into a series of entertaining 15-minute films.
The first episode of InSex will help fulfill my master's thesis requirements.
---My Three Primary Goals with InSex---
1. Be[e] funny! (Oh snap a pun...)
My favorite wildlife films are the ones that embrace edgy and sophisticated yet down-to-earth humor. I intend to draw inspiration from them.
Rest assured, however, I will endeavor to avoid the hackneyed techniques of the crappier reality-TV-style documentaries.
2. Be factual!
During my undergrad years, I learned that it is frightfully easy to make erroneous statements regarding evolution and animal behavior.
I intend to tread very carefully when I write the script. I will also show my film to entomologists before making it public.
3. Be photogenic!
I plan on using several technologies to make my film a visual fiesta, including high speed photography, a motorized slider, and numerous lenses and accessories.
I even have an endoscope! It was designed for insertion into urethras, but hey, it'll work just fine for insects! Just gotta clean it off...
---The Film's Approach---
The primary focus of InSex will be insects (naturally). However, I've come to believe that human relatability is a key factor in making a film more enjoyable and viable.
For decades, wildlife filmmakers have exploited anthropomorphism to boost ratings. Unfortunately, anthropomorphism can be misleading and cheesy. In InSex, I will draw comical parallels between human and insect behaviors without outright anthropomorphizing the animals.
For instance, imagine a human boyfriend and girlfriend sitting at opposite ends of a park bench. Both are preoccupied with their cell phones. The human male sends a sexual text ("sext") message to his girlfriend to arrange some... evening intimacy. She giggles. They scoot closer together.
I subsequently enter the scene wearing an eccentric firefly costume, complete with antennae and glowing rear end. Using the camera LED on the same cell phone, I demonstrate how fireflies can also communicate their sexual intentions wirelessly using pulses of light.
---The Fundraiser---
To raise money for InSex, I am selling an assortment of prints, including bug macros, animal portraits, images in exotic wavelengths (infrared, ultraviolet , and X-ray), and landscapes.
The proceeds will help cover production and post production costs.
